SOOW Cord

SOOW Cord are one of the most popular and versatile portable copper electrical cords made today.  These are multi-conductor cords (at least 2 conductors) that can be used both indoors and outdoors.  They have superior resistance to oil, water and chemicals.  Sizes on these cords range from 18 AWG to 2 AWG.

There are many environments you can utilize SOOW portable cord.  They are found in commercial, residential and industrial facilities including mills, mines, and marinas and on many factory floors.  They use a high stranding to add extra flexibility making it ideal on many portable appliances or motors.

These cords are created by using thermoset, thermoplastic elastomer or thermoplastic.  The thermoset, or rubber, is found in more heavy duty applications.  The thermoplastic elastomer, or plastic that looks and feels like rubber, withstands colder environments better.  The thermoplastic is simply a lighter grade plastic that is used in very light duty applications such as on lamps.

SOOW Cords are rubber cords with a 600 volt rating.  They are also manufacturered as a 300 volt rated “Junior Service” cord designated as SJOOW.  To better explain the letter designations used for SOOW Cords and other portable cords, here is the key:

S = Service Cord (600 Volts)
J = Junior Service Cord (300 Volts)
T = Thermoplastic
E = Elastomer
O = Oil Resistant Outside Jacket
OO = Oil Resistant both inside insulation and outside jacket
W = CSA designation for weather/water resistance

So using the key, a SJEOOW cord is a 300 volt (junior service) elastomer plastic oil resistant inner and outer jacket portable cord.  As you can see, many types of cords are created using this key depending on application.  SOOW cords, the most popular cord of the group, can be found in as many as high 60 conductors while the junior service 300 volt construction is rarely found over 5 conductors. A SEOOW cord is almost always found with a bright yellow heavy duty jacket which makes it ideal in some extremely cold environments.

In the copper electrical wiring world of flexibility, dependability and portable power, very few products are used more than the family of SO cords.  To learn more about portable cords, you can visit Portable Cords.
